Burton R. Hoffmann was born and raised in Manning, Iowa. He attended Grinnell College and Columbia University, receiving a doctorate in 1970.

He taught choral and instrumental music in the public schools of Iowa and Westchester County, New York. Then he took an early retirement to devote his time to writing. One of his plays, Carrie’s Choice, was produced by the Area Players of Long Island.

Tales of Hoffmann was given two staged readings by the Theatre-Studio, Inc. of New York. Love Creek Productions did three showcase performances of All the Rugged Way in 1999. His poetry and memoirs have appeared in small magazines across the United States.
